Love at first sight
“I believe in love at first sight. In fact, love at first sight is the only love I believe in.”
Love seems to take many forms: Romantic love, parental love, familial love, the love of friends. People speak of love as developing, growing, or dying. We talk of falling in and falling out, of love. We attempt to compartmentalize it, putting ‘this’ type of love over here, ‘that’ type of love over there….but I’m skeptical. I’m skeptical of love that needs a reason; I’m skeptical of love that hedges its bets. I’m skeptical of love that stays within the lines, and I don’t believe our hearts know the difference between love that is for one thing, and love that is for another. The force of love makes no distinctions, that is its hallmark. Like Diana Vreeland, I believe in love at first sight….even though some loves have taken my mind time to accept, I can still say, upon close inspection, that they began immediately in my heart, and then, have never left. I have been lucky…oh, so lucky…to have had the experience of it several times in my life. It has always been unexpected…it has always taken me by surprise. It has always awed and in some way, healed me….love at first sight.
