Cold Weather Soup

When I woke up this morning to a few inches of snow on the ground, I knew what I had to do…..get down to the kitchen and start chopping vegetables for my favorite cold-weather soup!

My friend Linda Dooley gave me this recipe years ago, and I think of her every time I make it.  It is so healthy, satisfying, and delicious, and it tastes better the next day…..you can also double the batch and freeze some for another day. Enjoy!

Snow Day!

Finally, a snow day….when hope had almost been lost, and with spring  just around the corner, the fat flakes of this unexpected snow bring joy and appreciation for the beauty of a winter’s day.  Kids home from school, husband home from work…..a pot of soup simmering on the stove and a wood fire burning all day…..a feeling of safety and togetherness settles upon us.  We are content to be here.

Love at first sight

Love seems to take many forms: Romantic love, parental love, familial love, the love of friends. People speak of love as developing, growing, or dying. We talk of falling in and falling out, of love. We attempt to compartmentalize it, putting ‘this’ type of love over here, ‘that’ type of love over there….but I’m skeptical. read more

A ‘wow I live in Washington!” Moment….last December, I was driving past the Washington Monument at dusk.  The colors in the sky were unlike any I had seen before, and as we passed I leaned out the car window with my iPhone to try to capture this amazing sight.  My hands were shaking, I was so afraid I would miss the shot (and/or drop my iPhone!) but what came out was this picture.
